Student Vote at CDA
I was recently informed that as a result of CDA’s reorganization, its bylaws were changed. In the past, one student member received a vote at the meeting of the voting members. Now, as far as I understand, that vote has been rescinded. Read more

Update on Dental Amalgam Waste Requirements
Environment Canada published a Final Notice in the Canada Gazette on May 8, 2010, that will require some Canadian dental offices to prepare and implement a pollution prevention (P2) plan regarding mercury releases from dental amalgam waste. Read more

Improvements to NIHB Discussed at Days on the Hill Meetings
On May 5 and 6, CDA held its Days on the Hill, an annual event that focuses on meetings with federal party leaders, cabinet ministers, members of Parliament (MPs) and other senior government officials. These sessions allow the Canadian dental profession to communicate directly with the federal government on key oral health issues. Read more
Improvement in the Oral Health of Canadians
The publication of the oral health component of the Canada Health Measures Survey (CHMS) reveals that the oral health of Canadians has improved over the last 30 years. CDA and the Office of the Chief Dental Officer worked together to ensure that oral health data was included in this national health survey. Although the CHMS results indicate that the current oral health care system is benefitting the majority of Canadians, CDA will continue to advocate for improved access to care. Read more
Dr. Ronald Smith: At the Helm of CDA
Dr. Ronald Smith of Duncan, British Columbia, is CDA’s new president. Dr. Smith brings years of experience to the role, having served in various capacities with the College of Dental Surgeons of British Columbia, the British Columbia Dental Association and CDA. Moving from process to progress will be the guiding principle during his tenure, as he believes all parties within Canadian organized dentistry are ready to work collegially on important oral health projects. An avid sailor, Dr. Smith will “captain the CDA ship” in the coming year. Read more
Update on Dentistry Canada Fund
The members of the Dentistry Canada Fund (DCF), the Canadian charity for oral health for 15 years, directed the DCF Board of Directors to close the charity in September 2009. The decision to shut down DCF wasn’t made lightly, and after a thorough review of DCF’s operations by CDA’s corporate members, it was determined to be the best way forward. Read more
New Legislation Extends Special Benefits to Self-Employed Workers
The Canadian government recently approved the Fairness for the Self-Employed Act, legislation that extends Employment Insurance (EI) special benefits, including maternity, parental, sickness and compassionate care benefits, to self-employed workers. This new legislation would require self-employed Canadians to contribute to the EI program for at least one year before claiming any of these special benefits. Self-employed workers who choose to make a claim for these special benefits must continue paying premiums as long as they retain their self-employed status. They would also be responsible for making premium payments beginning in the tax year in which they apply to the EI program. However, self-employed Canadians will remain ineligible for any basic EI coverage. Read more
