Fire Affects U of T Dental Fraternity

My name is Nicole Maciel and I am this year’s president of the XI PSI PHI dental fraternity. I am writing to inform dentists of the misfortune that occurred at the XI PSI PHI house.

XI PSI PHI is a co-ed fraternity with over 100 members that provides dental students at the University of Toronto with social activities, academic assistance and mentorship. The fraternity owns a house in the heart of the Annex and provides 10 dental students with subsidized housing. The house is also used for events, seminars and other review sessions.

On September 10, 2010, there was an electrical fire in a bedroom on the third floor. Thankfully, no one was hurt. However, the fire resulted in smoke, water and structural damage to all levels of the house. One student on the third floor lost everything and others will have to replace many personal items including computers, books, mattresses and clothes. All 10 dental students have been displaced during the time of construction, which has been estimated at a minimum of 3 months. Some of us are fortunate to be able to stay with family, but others have no relatives in the local area and are sleeping on couches at fellow students’ apartments.

We are accepting any help available. Donations in any amount would be greatly appreciated to help replace personal items, other items in the common areas of the house or to find temporary accommodations for those who need it most.
